Cathia Finkel, Susan Jamieson, & Janet Peter
SCAPE
November 4 - December 5, 2001
Opening: Sunday, November 4, 2 - 5 PM
Nature, including human nature, is not just visual, it is felt in its energy, growth and
renewal. SCAPE exemplifies the changing relationship between the artist and
its environment. The result is a selection of works which are diverse and
innovative in both media and approach.
Through paint, with its propensities so similar to water and mud, Susan Jamieson's
primary source of inspiration is nature. Through the contemplation of nature, she
seeks to find ways to express thoughts about humankind and our relationship to the
forces of the physical world.
Cathia Finkel's recent body of photographs are of female friends. The women
that she has sought out embody qualities that have captured and compelled her
imagination into action and thoughtfulness. Her contemporary heroines are drawn
loosely upon historical persons and religious figures. Finkel's intention is to reveal
the unguarded moment between moments. Up-close and personal these human
scapes explore the essence of these individuals.
Janet Peter's paintings that use papier mache lend themselves to more sculptural,
sensual pieces that encourage the viewer to touch and experience the medium
rather than view from a distance. The resulting experience is more visceral, personal
and sensual then strictly optical. She lends dimension to a traditionally flat surface.
Jamieson, Finkel and Peter all live and work in St. John's.
