Message from
the Artistic Animateur
RCA Theatre Company welcomes you back for our 2009-10 Season. Our renovations are ongoing and we are greatly anticipating a return to our home, the LSPU Hall in early 2010. Until then, we are still in our temporary office at 223-233 Duckworth Street - Suite 202 Haymarket Square. We have are many inspiring projects in the works this year, and we’re starting off our season with a bang: our first main stage offering is Rocking the Cradle by Des Walsh, award winning Playwright and Gemini winner. Richard Rose, Artistic Director of Tarragon Theatre, will direct the show at the MUN Reid Theatre, October 8th - 18th, 2009. The production will then play at Tarragon Theatre in Toronto from November 11th -December 13th 2009. For more information about Rocking the Cradle click here Another goal this season is further engagement with our youth in play development and new works. RCA Theatre, in partnership with Canadian Parents for French (CPF), will be touring the schools in our province with a new production that will promote the French Culture of Newfoundland and Labrador as well as encourage students to continue to study French as a second language. In 2005 RCA Theatre Company partnered with CPF on a similar project; that production Speak For Yourself/Parle -c’est l’idéal has been picked up by CPF Nova Scotia, and is touring the schools in that province this season. Keeping with our outreach to youth, our Statoil Canada Playwriting Series for Young People is being launched this year. Award winning novelist and playwright Joel Hynes will be visiting several High Schools in October and November to promote our students involvement. This program will feature prominent Newfoundland playwrights working with our youth in a series of seminars to develop their skills as playwrights. For information about The Statoil Canada Playwriting Series, click here. As we begin this season we already have several new plays in development. We look forward to the first draft of Left Right and Centre in October, an RCA Theatre commission by Governor General Award Winning playwright Anne Chislett. Our Write On! workshop is currently in progress; dramaturge Ed Riche is working with four playwrights on three different plays: Our Eliza by Megan Coles, Melody Neglected by Liz Pickard, and One Last Dance by Rory Lambert and Nicole Rousseau. Staged readings of these exciting new works will take place in the second space of our newly renovated LSPU Hall in February 2009. For information about Write On! click here. Our Significant Other Series presents a new show by Jane Maggs called Until June. With the assistance of RCA Theatre Company, Until June has been in development for a couple years. In May 2008 the play was workshopped at The Banff Playwrights Colony. Originally produced by East of Reason Theatre, Until June had a premiere production in Toronto at The Factory Theatre as part of the 2008 Summerworks Festival, where Jane got an honourable mention as an emerging artist. I extend a sincere thank you to our sponsors, funders, and patrons for your continued confidence and support. We look forward to exciting year of development as we prepare to return to our home, the LSPU Hall, for a new beginning in Newfoundland and Labrador Theatre history. Amy House |
