Freely adapted from Lorca’s Yerma (a word applied to the land meaning empty/barren/bare), Rocking the Cradle explores the character of Joan, played by Ruth Lawrence, and her desperate desire for motherhood in a troubled marriage. The play contrasts the physical and emotional emptiness of Joan with other vibrant relationships in the community. Rocking the Cradle is set in rural pre-moratorium Newfoundland during the 1960’s and features many of the cast singing traditional ballads a cappella.

"There is no disease in the world like desire..." - Mary (played by Didi Gillard-Rowlings) from Rocking the Cradle

"I immediately thought of Des Walsh, knowing the playwright had to be poet, humourist and a musicologist much like Lorca." - Richard Rose

"When Richard Rose approached me, I read all of Lorca's plays, and in Yerma, I felt as if I knew those characters, almost heard them as a child." - Des Walsh

"Having worked on Yerma at George Brown College I found all the translations recommended to me either too stilted, too academic in translation or too British.  I asked a Spanish speaking person about Lorca's Andalusian-accented Spanish, particularly whether there was a humour - something I felt about the situations but not expressed in the translations.  They said yes with the added thought that Andalusia was an isolated place.  I said "Like Newfoundland and the way of speaking there?"  They said: "Exactly."  I immediately thought of Des Walsh and the "outport" scenario, knowing the playwright had to be poet, humourist and a musicologist much like Lorca." - Richard Rose

RCA Theatre presents Reading from the 5th Write On! Workshop
RCA Theatre Company, with its sponsorship from Debbie Hanlon of Hanlon Realty, the fifth Write On! Workshop began in May 2009. Aimed at developing the skills of playwrights in our community, this workshop was led by award-winning novelist, screenwriter and playwright Ed Riche and featured three plays (and four playwrights!) participating:

Melody Neglected by Liz Solo
One Last Dance by Rory Lambert and Nicole Rousseau
Our Eliza by Megan Coles

Work continued throughout the summer. Staged readings of these exciting new works will take place in the second space of our newly renovated LSPU Hall in February 2009.

Broken Accidents

Co-produced by Neighbourhood Dance Works and RCA Theatre Company.

Broken Accidents is a creation based collaboration by Lois Brown, Joel Thomas Hynes, Sarah Joy Stoker and Louise Moyes.

Inspired by the book by Phlip Arima, Broken Accidents is a multidisciplinary performance that explores desperation and hope in a black, satirical comedy.
